Today's top story

AI agents are already shopping for charter, and a pilot-congressman says the FAA, not a new agency, should write the AI rules

Speaking at NBAA-BACE on October 20, Rep. Jay Obernolte (R-California), a 6,200-hour pilot who has flown his own Phenom 300 for 15 years and holds a graduate degree in AI, said sector regulators such as the FAA should write AI rules, with testing tools and expertise from NIST's Center for AI Standards and Innovation, rather than a standalone AI agency. He said the EU AI Act leaves companies in regulated sectors answering to two regulators. In aviation he sees promise in sifting safety data for accident warning signs, optimizing flight paths and forecasting hazards, but "You absolutely do not want AI making unmonitored, autonomous, safety-critical decisions." Because neural networks cannot explain their answers, he said, the FAA will have to do more thinking about AI than it does for deterministic systems such as Garmin Autoland. The commercial point landed hardest: Donald Howell, president and CFO of Southern Sky Aviation, said Google's Gemini has already called his company twice for a charter quote. Obernolte predicted such agents will steer business toward the most efficient operators and urged operators who automate quotes to add a second algorithm that checks each price. "I would use AI to safeguard my AI," he said, as reported by AIN on October 21.

$ Why it pays: If AI agents are calling for quotes, the operator that answers fastest with an accurate, bookable price gets the trip, and the one that answers slowly or wrongly does not. Speed with a bad number is worse than no answer. Check how quickly your desk responds to a phone or email request today, make sure your published aircraft and pricing information is current, and put a second check on any automated quote before it goes out.

Recruiting

Sponsor this section - Open

Thin today: no new AI hiring tool surfaced in the last 72 hours. The one item below is computer-based training for new technicians, not AI.

Context first: in a new survey of 200 Part 91 flight department leaders released at NBAA-BACE by staffing firm Aviation Personnel International, 45% named compensation and benefits as a top concern and 39% named the ability to recruit qualified aviation professionals. AI tool

Ready for Work - CAE

Launched at NBAA-BACE and reported by AIN on October 21. Online learning modules for the roughly two years between a technician earning an A&P certificate and starting initial type training, supporting on-the-job training rather than replacing it. A supervisor can track each new hire's progress through online milestone assessments. CAE has 10 courses available and another 30 coming over the next six to eight months. CAE says shops have moved from about nine experienced technicians per new hire to more like seven new technicians for three experienced ones. This is not an AI tool.

$ Why it pays: Every hour a veteran spends teaching basics is an hour not billed. Structured basics let new hires start billing sooner, and CAE argues that investing in them early also helps retention. Price it against what your senior technicians' coaching time costs you today.

Flight Leads for Avianis operators - Levo

Levo now connects to Portside's Avianis scheduling and charter management system, AIN reported on October 21. Avianis operators can use Levo's AI-powered sales workflow, which matches incoming charter requests against the operator's own fleet and prices them from the operator's own Avianis configuration, with legs, fees and taxes applied. A quote cannot be sent until someone on the operator's team reviews and approves it.

$ Why it pays: Charter desks are not short of requests; they are short of time to see which ones are worth quoting. Matching against your own fleet and rates means fewer wrong numbers, and the review step keeps a person signing off on every price, which is exactly the safeguard Obernolte recommended in today's top story.

AI tool

Opty - Optifly

Launched October 21 and on show at Routes World in Frankfurt this week. An agentic AI layer across Optifly's scheduling, slot, fleet and network software, built on AWS and Amazon Bedrock, that models schedule changes against an airline's operating rules, bookings, competitor moves and airport slot-use thresholds. In production testing on an existing summer schedule it found 10 extra weekly sectors from the same fleet, worth up to EUR 6 million by Optifly's estimate. Every scenario is checked against maintenance, crew and slot constraints before a human scheduler signs off. Wider release of automated multi-scenario generation is planned for January 2027.

$ Why it pays: Extra flying from aircraft you already own is the cheapest revenue there is. Optifly targets up to 1.0% lower fuel burn and up to 5% higher utilization. Ask for the test on your own schedule and check that maintenance windows were treated as hard limits.

Predictive Maintenance

Thin today: one OEM program update, and Gulfstream describes it as analytics run by its own technical experts rather than calling it AI.

AI tool

Performance Analytics - Gulfstream Customer Support

Expanded October 20. The program combines aircraft health monitoring data, operational data and maintenance history, and Gulfstream's engineers and analytics specialists turn it into proactive maintenance, service and spare parts recommendations. Gulfstream says it has helped address nearly 100 potential operational events before they happened this year, and expects to more than double its analytics capabilities in the first half of 2027 as it adds aircraft systems and models.

$ Why it pays: An event caught early becomes a planned fix instead of a cancelled trip. Gulfstream operators should ask which systems and models are covered today, how recommendations reach their maintenance team, and whether parts are positioned before the work is due.

AI technical records tool at Celma - GE Aerospace

On GE Aerospace's third-quarter earnings call on October 20, CEO Larry Culp said GE built an AI-enabled tool at Celma, its largest MRO site, in Brazil, that automates collecting the technical records required for each CFM56 engine shop visit. "This helped decrease record processing time by around 25%," he said. That is the records step, not the whole repair. Culp also said turnaround time across GE's network is down by over a week since the end of 2025, with LEAP down two weeks. It is an internal GE tool, not a product for sale.

$ Why it pays: Records chasing is dead time on every shop visit, and it is the same in a small engine or component shop. Time how long your team spends assembling records for one induction, then look for the AI records tools that can take that off them.

Due List Agent - AeroKeeper

Demonstrated live at NBAA-BACE this week. The agent reads a due list from an uploaded PDF or a connected maintenance tracking system, extracts the upcoming tasks, identifies parts, estimates labor and generates a work order or quote with the supporting documentation, ready for review.

$ Why it pays: Turning a customer's due list into a quote is hours of retyping for most repair stations, and the shop that quotes first often wins the work. Feed it a due list you have already quoted by hand and compare the tasks, parts and hours line by line.

Troubleshooting Support

Thin today: no new hangar troubleshooting tool in the last 72 hours. The closest new item troubleshoots an international trip before planning starts.

AI tool

SkyX - UAS International Trip Support

Launched October 20 at NBAA-BACE as part of UAS's GTMx trip management platform and reported by AIN on October 21. Users describe a planned mission in their own words and the SkyX AI agent returns an initial feasibility assessment covering operational requirements, constraints, and logistics and safety considerations for the destination. It is in beta testing with operators, and UAS says final decisions stay with human experts.

$ Why it pays: Finding out late that a permit, slot or airspace problem makes a trip unworkable costs you the customer and the repositioning. A fast first answer helps a dispatcher say yes or no sooner. Check its answers against a few trips your team has already planned before you rely on it.

Warehousing

Sponsor this section - Open

From an industry feature, not a product launch. No new parts storage robotics surfaced in the last 72 hours.

Aviation Week's MRO Memo on October 21 asked parts traders where AI really helps. GA Telesis CEO Abdol Moabery warned that "A chatbot attached to an [Enterprise Resource Planning] system is not an AI strategy," and APOC Aviation's Darren Naughton said the quality of in-house data will matter more than the model on top of it. AI tool

Apollo - AJW Group

AJW Group's own inventory management system, described by chief commercial officer Scott Symington in Aviation Week's October 21 MRO Memo. It uses probabilistic modeling to balance service levels against the capital tied up in stock. Symington expects predictive capability to become increasingly important for spotting demand and positioning material before it is needed.

$ Why it pays: Every part on the shelf is cash that is not working, and every part you do not have can become an AOG. Modeling the odds of demand for each part number helps you stock less without missing more. Before buying any forecasting tool, clean up your own usage history, because that is what the model will learn from.

No new AI parts-sourcing launch today. The tool below is about recovering trips when an aircraft goes down, and the robotics note is a test program, not a service you can book.

Robotics

Reliable Robotics flies an automated cargo Caravan at Albuquerque Sunport

Reliable Robotics and the City of Albuquerque Aviation Department flew a remotely piloted Cessna 208B Caravan at Albuquerque International Sunport, New Mexico's largest commercial airport, under the FAA and DOT's eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP), AvWeb reported on October 20 after an FAA announcement. The system is designed to handle taxi, takeoff, en route flight and landing under remote pilot supervision. The plan is autonomous cargo flights from Albuquerque to Santa Fe and Durango, and more test flights are planned through the end of the year. The FAA did not say whether a safety pilot was aboard.

$ Why it pays: Feeder cargo is how many urgent parts reach smaller airports. Flying at a busy commercial airport is a step toward certified autonomous feeder routes, though nothing here is bookable yet. Parts and logistics teams serving the Southwest should watch the Santa Fe and Durango routes.

Contrails FMS - flyExclusive

Announced October 21 at NBAA-BACE: Fly Alliance, an operator with more than 100,000 flight hours and 50,000 dispatched legs, will replace its flight management system across its whole operation with Contrails FMS. The platform combines scheduling, crew compliance, dispatch, maintenance visibility, disruption recovery and fleet optimization with AI-assisted workflows. It is offered with no licensing fees, per-seat charges or feature gates. In return, participating operators can share authorized, real-time aircraft availability so they can book flights on each other's aircraft; flyExclusive says customer identities and pricing are not required.

$ Why it pays: When an aircraft goes AOG, the trip is saved by finding another aircraft fast. Shared live availability across operators makes that search quicker and turns empty legs into revenue. Read the data-sharing terms closely and ask what happens to your data if you leave.

No licensing fees, per flyExclusive

AI tool

Claude Duet - Anthropic

Opened October 21 as a research preview by waitlist for US Pro and Max subscribers. A separate app on iOS, Android and claude.ai in which Claude works as a proactive agent for professionals and small business owners. It sends a morning brief on what matters across your connected apps, messages you when something needs attention, and keeps working on tasks after you step away. Before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, it shows you exactly what it will do and waits for approval.

$ Why it pays: Owner-operators of small charter companies, FBOs and repair stations live in their inbox and calendar. An assistant that flags the unpaid invoice or the double-booked meeting before it costs you is useful, and the approval step keeps it from acting alone. It is an early preview, so start with low-stakes admin tasks.

AI Glossary

AgentSoftware that carries out a series of steps toward a goal, such as calling an operator for a charter quote or turning a due list into a work order, instead of only answering one question.
Agentic AIAI built to plan and carry out work on its own, often with several agents handling different parts of a job. Optifly's Opty uses it to build schedule options that a person then approves.
AI skillA saved set of instructions an AI assistant reuses, such as your writing style or a fixed format for customer updates, so you do not have to repeat them every time.
AutonomousAble to do a task, such as taxiing and flying a cargo Caravan, without a person controlling every move. In today's examples a person still supervises and can step in.
Human in the loopA setup where a person reviews and approves what the AI proposes, such as a quote or a schedule change, before anything happens.
Neural networkThe kind of AI model behind most modern AI tools. It learns patterns from large amounts of data, but it cannot easily explain why it gave a particular answer, which is why regulators treat it differently from fixed rule-based software.
Proactive agentAn AI assistant that comes to you first, such as flagging an unpaid invoice or a calendar clash, instead of waiting to be asked.
Probabilistic modelingEstimating the odds of different outcomes, such as how likely a part is to be needed next month, rather than predicting one fixed number. It suits parts with rare, unpredictable demand.
