Rolls-Royce, built with Microsoft

Topic: Maintenance Optimization

Described by Microsoft on October 21: an agentic AI system Rolls-Royce uses to plan its engine shop visits, close to 1,500 in 2025. An Engine Agent draws on data about individual engines, a Workscope Agent helps determine what maintenance may be needed, Facility Agents weigh shop capacity and capability, and a Supplier Agent handles the supply chain, while people keep oversight. A planning exercise that took four or five people about a week has been materially reduced, and Rolls-Royce says it is helping reduce engine turnaround times. It is still developing.

Why it can make you money

An engine in the shop is an aircraft not earning. Faster re-planning when a part slips or a slot opens means engines go back to airlines sooner. For Rolls-Royce customers the payoff is shorter shop visits; for your own planners, it is a model for splitting a planning job into agents with a person approving the result.
