MIXIT digital colour retrieval for aircraft coatings (AkzoNobel)

AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings

Topic: Maintenance Optimization

AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings has brought its MIXIT digital colour retrieval system to aviation, MRO Business Today reported on November 2, after launching it at MRO Europe in Amsterdam. The cloud-based platform lets MRO providers, airline paint shops and distributors look up approved colour formulas on desktops, tablets and phones. When the formula is unknown, a connected spectrophotometer, a handheld colour-measuring device, scans the aircraft surface or a paint sample and finds the closest match in the database. Technicians then use a mixing wall and precision scales to prepare the coating with the right tints, hardeners and thinners. The first database has more than 2,700 formulas for frequently requested tints of Topcoat FR2-55, a coating used for cabin interiors. Exterior coating formulas are planned for 2027, and AkzoNobel is considering stock management, e-commerce, reporting and customer-stored formulas for the same year. The system has been used in car refinishing for about a decade.

Why it can make you money

A cabin panel that waits for the right paint is an aircraft that cannot go back to service, and mixing on site from a verified formula saves the wait for a shipment or a second try at matching by eye. If your shop does cabin touch-ups, ask how many of the colours you use are already in the database and what the scanner costs, since exterior colours do not arrive until 2027.
